This year we are offering a great variety of courses on the farm, including cheesemaking, grow your own organic veg, breadmaking, garden willow structures, sharing the secrets of our famous cafe cakes, nutritional advice days and much more.
see courses for all details and email us or come in to the shop to book.
Welcome to holly and david this june for our BREADMAKING and TAPAS COURSES Manna from Devon (www.mannafromdevon.com) is a small cookery school in beautiful South Devon, just over the river from Dartmouth. They run hands-on cooking courses using the fabulous local produce in the area. Bread, fish, Mediterranean cooking and family days are amongst their most popular days.
The school is run by Holly and David Jones – both enthusiastic and experienced teachers with a passion for sharing their knowledge. They are now on the road and coming to the Organic Farm Shop to teach 2 hands-on courses at the end of June.
Some of you may remember Holly who cooked in the café in its early years before heading off on a yacht race and then upping sticks to Devon. Her time at the Organic Farm Shop is still inspiring her – “we now have 12 rescue chickens at the end of the garden; a fruit, vegetable and herb garden as a work in progress and a desire to pass on our passion for cooking and local food to our students”
Sat 27th June. A Real Bread Workshop where you will learn the basics of making dough (using some of Abbey Home Farm’s own flour) and produce a variety of loaves to take home with you.
“At Manna from Devon we make bread as it should be made; with first class ingredients, lots of time and heaps of respect and if you join one of our breadmaking classes you'll get to grips (literally!) with the whole process of making bread.”
Run by David, a passionate bread maker, these one day workshops focus on gaining an understanding of three basic doughs and the huge variety of breads that these doughs allow you to make. Working with organic, stoneground flours we will make white, olive oil and wholemeal doughs, discussing ingredients, nutrition, flavour development, fermentation and every other aspect of breadmaking along the way. Practice shaping loaves, rolls, flatbreads and baguettes and go home with a variety of loaves.
Sun 28th June. Holly will be teaching one of Manna from Devon’s most popular courses – Tapas. Tapas are unlimited by size, ingredient or fixed sequence within a meal; they present a wealth of choice, colour, aroma and uninhibited experimentation - truly a diner's delight.
Although quintessentially Spanish, Tapas are so well-suited to today's style of casual eating that they have caught the popular imagination. A selection of Tapas is ideal for an interesting informal meal, and they are wonderful fare for a party, buffet, picnic or barbecue. Most can be made quickly and easily, a great many can be made in advance and served at room temperature while others can be partly prepared and then finished at the last minute before serving.
We will be using the best available seasonal meat and vegetables from the farm, vegetable garden and the Organic Farm Shop’s suppliers.
Both courses include lunch, recipes and aprons. All you need to do is book your place, turn up in comfortable covered shoes and clothes you are happy to cook in and then enjoy your day.

NEWS RELEASE: THE ORGANIC FARM SHOP WINS ENVIRONMENTAL FARM SHOP TITLE
The Organic Farm Shop in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, has scooped the Environmental retailer of the year award from the National Farmers’ Retail & Markets’ Association (FARMA). The decision was announced at the FARMA national conference on 11 November 2008.
The FARMA judges considered that the Organic Farm Shop was ‘going that extra mile to assure a positive future for our planet’ and set the goal post high for other farm retailers. The farm is certified by the Soil Association, producing its own soft fruit, vegetables, milk, cream, yoghurt, cheese, eggs, lamb, beef, pork and chicken. The on-site café works with whatever is in season on the farm to produce a range of homemade vegetarian meals (except on Sundays!) – everything is cooked on site - only the locally-made bread is bought in.
Business owner Hilary Chester-Master, places a huge emphasis on conservation and sustainability, from farming techniques to the shop design. The farm shop building and all the counters are made from the farm’s own green oak, and the café’s tables and chairs from reclaimed wood. No new plastic carrier bags are used, and the shop has been selling fair-trade jute bags at cost price for the past nine years – long before the supermarkets even considered the idea. In fact, recycling is the order of the day, with customer drop-off points in the car park, and just one bucket per day of raw food waste from the shop - which naturally ends up on the compost heap.
Visitors come from around the globe to see this model of environmental self-sufficiency. The farmshop and cafe has its own bore hole, solar panels and wood chip boiler which provide enough heating and hot water for the whole building, and there are plans to install a large wind turbine on site to take the farm ‘off grid’. Hilary and Will regularly host educational visits, talks, and Soil Association masterclasses, (but the highlight of the year) and have organised for the last three years the Ragged Hedge Fair which attracted up to 4,000 people to a weekend of simple living. The entire event, including four cafes, three stages, an ecoforum and site lighting, is powered by wind and solar energy alone.
Nigel Chandler, farm shop manager at Garsons in Surrey, and one of this year’s judges, commented, ‘Many farm shops are working hard to improve their environmental credentials; recycling waste, sourcing local and seasonal food, using sustainable packaging and so on. However, The Organic farm shop stands out as a business model, with a concern for the planet at its heart.‘
The FARMA awards are peer-assessed by other farm retailers, including previous award winners. An independent mystery shopper report is also available to the judges.
