Over the day, Harry will teach you the basics of carving green wood. You will start the day with a spoon blank and using only a straight knife and a hook knife you will learn the safe and efficient way of using these tools. And, before lunch you will have carved a spoon!
After lunch we will focus on the whole process from log to product. You will learn the principles of cleaving wood with a froe or axe, then we will rough out a spoon blank with a carving axe and then putting into practice the skills you gained before lunch. The techniques you will learn over this day will allow you to progress towards carving a plethora of wooden products.

A simple organic vegetarian lunch is provided to share together, please let us know any dietary requirements when booking.

Spatula Making short course

Over the 2 hour workshop, Harry will teach you the basics of carving green wood. You will start with a spatula blank and using only a straight knife you will learn the safe and efficient way of using an edge tool to create a beautiful, functional and ergonomic product. The skills gained within this session will allow you to go on and carve a plethora of utensil goodness.

The green woodworking courses will take place in the woodlands (under shelter) at Abbey Home Farm. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring wet weather clothes if it looks like rain. There will be a 5 - 10 minute walk from the car park over uneven ground.

Harry Samuel - Tutor -

After training with Barnaby Carder a.k.a Barn the Spoon and completing an apprenticeship at Cherry Wood, Harry is now a full time traditional woodworker based in the south west of the UK. He manages a couple plots of woodland to supply the raw materials for his work crafting treen, greenwood furniture, timber frames and traditional coppice products.

He also has a passion for working with people of all ages, gender and ability. Working with your hands is an empowering process that can help people to connect to their environment and to each other.
